The phacoemulsification console market is expected to grow moderately throughout the forecast period. The market for phacoemulsification consoles is closely related to the sale of IOLs. In fact, phacoemulsification consoles are often sold in conjunction with IOLs and disposables required for cataract surgery. This practice blurs the actual ASPs for these systems because of the incentives associated with large IOL and disposable purchases.

Growth of the phacoemulsification console market is expected to continue because of the aging European population and increased prevalence of cataracts. Decisions to purchase these machines will be motivated wholly by the demand generated by the public. Because cataract surgery is considered essential and is covered by public health plans, the rate at which phacoemulsification sales will increase will reflect cataract procedures. In addition, rapid technological advances in IOLs and phacoemulsification consoles leads to relatively short lifespans of the devices, which range from five to seven years.

As the population ages, the incidence of cataracts will increase. Cataract surgeries are considered necessary and thus the demand for phacoemulsification will remain strong.

There are two main types of cataract surgeries, those that involve phacoemulsification and those that involve extracapsular cataract extraction. Phacoemulsification is the preferred and most common technique because it requires a smaller incision for cataract removal. The small incision necessitates the insertion of foldable artificial lenses known as intraocular lenses (IOLs).
