The fistula first objective is to improve the quality of life and survival of hemodialysis patients through optimizing the selection of vascular access. The majority of patients will benefit most through AV fistula access. AV fistula lowers mortality rates, hospitalization and infection while minimizing costs. The push toward AV fistula and away from catheters and AV access grafts will be a limiter of growth for the AV access graft market. Peritoneal dialysis does not require the use of an AV access graft. Thus, the trend towards peritoneal dialysis will erode the number of hemodialysis patients and the amount of hemodialysis equipment sold. The market share and use of AV access grafts is projected to decrease proportional to the number of patients transitioning from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis.

Arteriovenous (AV) is the most common method of access for hemodialysis treatment in patients that are suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). AV access can be achieved via either AV fistula or AV graft. The fistula can be made in an extremity, typically in the forearm, where an artery and vein are surgically connected. This connection matures and strengthens over a period of four to six weeks. Native fistulae offer the best patency and durability, in addition to limiting complications such as post-dialysis bleeding and infection. A native fistula is the preferred access technique.
