About Commercial Aircraft Battery

Aircraft batteries are used to start engines while initiating taxiing or the APU. The batteries are also used to power the airplane interiors and services (such as broadband and air conditioning). The major battery chemistries that are generally used as modern aircraft batteries are lithium-based (Li-ion and lithium iron phosphate), nickel-based (Ni-Cd or nickel metal hydride), and lead-acid. Lead-acid batteries are usually employed in light and general aviation aircraft. The nickel-based batteries dominate larger aircraft and helicopter applications, which are being replaced by the lithium-based batteries since the past decade.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “In order to avoid aircraft accidents/dysfunction, Airbus shifted from using conventional Li-ion cells altogether in its jetliner the Airbus A350. Airbus has been using Ni-Cd battery chemistry so far in its aircraft, the A350 (in the models supplied to Qatar Airways). But the Ni-Cd solution presents low specific energy, high weight, and is sensitive to memory effect (i.e., deviation in the operating voltage of the battery), which is inconvenient for the modern carrier. This will result in almost double the number of batteries, a different charging system and a different battery management system (BMS). Airbus, thus, decided to employ its proprietary Li-ion battery technology to replace the Ni-Cd cells.”

According to the report, in modern commercial aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Li-ion batteries have been used as a major power source located in the forward electrical equipment bay and APU. These batteries support the refueling operations and enable to power braking systems when the aircraft is towed. They also support the functioning of critical electrical power equipment in case of a power failure. In addition, the APU and the generator start functioning once the main battery is switched on. The APU battery provides the power to start the APU, which in turn, starts the generators. The APU provides power for the onboard activities and backup power support (such as backup power for flight control electronics).

Further, the report states that the recurring incidence of fire breakouts that have been traced back to Li-ion batteries driving specific operations in aircraft, has been a cause of concern in the market. Batteries that are manufactured defectively undergo thermal runaway when the safety vents do not function. The fire incident in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner could be cited as an example. The APU of the aircraft, operated by Japan Airlines, caught fire due to thermal runaway when it was grounded, which originated due to overheating of a single cell, thereby forcing other cells to malfunction.
