Chrome coatings provide good wear resistance and are cheap. However, it causes health and environmental hazards due to the presence of hexavalent chromium. A few of the alternatives which are available in the industry are thermal spray, in particular high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) which is preferred due to its high strength and wear resistance, relatively low cost, and fast turnaround time.
