About Diesel Locomotive Engines

Diesel locomotive engines are used for transporting large amounts of freight due to its ability to move a large amount of freight at less fuel, increased speed, and safety. Railways are mainly used for transporting passengers and freight. Roadways are the largest contributor in the transport sector. However, due to increasing concerns regarding pollutions caused by vehicular emissions, rising fuel costs, and traffic congestion, freight companies are moving more and more toward the rail mode of transportation.

The analysts forecast the global diesel locomotive engines market to grow at a CAGR of 2.82% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Diesel Locomotive Engines Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global diesel locomotive engines market: General Electric, Caterpillar, and China CNR.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Alstom, Bombardier, and Siemens.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is hydrogen-powered locomotive engines. Alstom, a locomotive engine manufacturer, launched Coradia iLint, a hydrogen cell powered passenger train in Germany in 2016. This train does not require overhead electric cables for power and is non-polluting to the environment. The train is fueled by hydrogen fuel, which is placed on the roof and produces electric energy by mixing hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. This system emits only condensed water and steam as by-products. Since these trains run independently on hydrogen fuel, they do not need expensive infrastructural changes where lengthy kilometers of rail need to be electrified.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is economic and non-polluting mode of freight transport. Increase in the rate of congestion at highways is the primary factors that are detrimental to transporting freight through road. Highway congestion increases fuel and time wastage, which ultimately causes less freight to be transported through the network. Congestion on the highways in the Americas is estimated to cause a loss of more than $100 billion in terms of fuel wastage of multi-billion gallons. Other factors such as cargo delay and loss of productivity will contribute to reducing further economy of road mode of freight transport.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is emission standards for diesel locomotive engines. The transportation sector accounts for about 25% of the global greenhouse gas emissions where vehicles running on fossil fuels (diesel and gasoline) contribute to 95% of the emissions. The emission norms formulated by the different countries of the world mostly consider emission levels of road transport as they constitute the majority. Rail transport attributed to roughly 1% of the global carbon dioxide emissions whereas road transport attributed to about 20% of the carbon dioxide emissions in 2015. The increasing rate of electrification since the 1990s has reduced the dependence of locomotives on steam and fossil fuels.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
