About EV Transmission

The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) as a greener option to curb environmental pollution has shot up in recent times. There has been a shift in public perception from disapproving electric vehicles as costly and inferior in terms of quality such as power, efficiency, and comfort to a more viable option for transportation. Electric cars are powered by electric motors, unlike the internal combustion (IC) engines that run on gasoline or diesel.

The electric vehicle gets the energy stored in its batteries, which are rechargeable. Earlier during its launch, electrical vehicles were not widely adopted because of the low driving range and the need to recharge again. The charging stations were slow charging points, which used to take multiple hours to charge the battery.

The analysts forecast the global EV transmission market to grow at a CAGR of 46.73% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global EV Transmission Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global EV transmission market: GKN, ZF, and Antonov

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Almost all OEMs except BMW is using single-gear transmission technology. But certain drivetrain manufacturers such as ZF and GKN have plans to develop multi-gear transmission, as single-gear transmission does not perform well in very slow or very high speed. Antonov is also developing a 3-speed gearbox for electric vehicles to become a leading manufacturer of multi-gearbox speed transmission.”

According to the report, one of the major challenges to the wide-scale adoption of electric vehicles is range anxiety. Range anxiety is the fear that the vehicle does not have enough range to reach its destination and will be stranded on the road far away from charging stations. The apprehension stems from the fact that compared with conventional IC vehicles most electric vehicle models are not able to travel far. Many of the electric vehicles cannot even cover 150 miles on a single charge. The number of charging stations is also not sufficient to fulfill the charging requirement of the electric vehicles. Most of the charging stations are slow charging stations that take multiple hours to charge the battery, which is not desirable.

Further, the report states that electricity production from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas is the major contributor to greenhouse gases. Around 30% of the total greenhouse gases produced in the US is from electricity production from fossil fuels. The second major contributor to greenhouse gases is from the automotive industry. Approximately 26% of the total emitted greenhouse gas is from the transportation which includes burning of fossil fuels from cars, trucks, bus, ships, planes, and trains.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
