About Aircraft Line Maintenance

Line maintenance is a part of aircraft MRO, which refers to the works on discrepancies as per the requirements of the flight crew in order to ensure airworthy condition of the aircraft. These works are conducted before or in between flight operations on a regular basis. Line maintenance involves two components: labor and materials. Some of the line maintenance activities are A checks, weekly/overnight checks, daily checks, transit checks, and pre-flight checks.

The analysts forecast the global aircraft line maintenance market to grow at a CAGR of 4.13% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Aircraft Line Maintenance Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global aircraft line maintenance market: Delta TechOps, Lufthansa Technik, Monarch Aircraft Engineering, SIA Engineering Company, and SR Technics

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Ameco, BCT Aviation Maintenance, British Airways (Engineering), FL Technics, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd (HAECO), National Aviation Services, National Aviation Ground Support, SAMCO Aircraft Maintenance, STS Aviation Group, TAP Maintenance & Engineering, Tarmac Aerosave, Textron Aviation, Turkish Technic, and United Technical Operations

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The outsourcing of non-core activities (like aircraft MRO) in order to reduce the overall cost has been a trend in the aviation industry due to the cost-effective structure and effectual time management. Most MRO activities like heavy airframe, components, and engines are mostly outsourced, apart from line maintenance, as most aircraft carriers consider it a core activity and prefer that it is done in-house. For instance, Air Works performs third party line maintenance services at the Chennai, Trichy, Thiruvananthapuram, and Bengaluru airports in India. It costs around $200 and takes around 45 minutes to complete line maintenance for each narrow-bodied aircraft, and $400 and two hours per wide-bodied aircraft.”

According to the report, the growing global passenger traffic leads to an increase in the number of flight hours. The average utilization rate of an aircraft is around 8.13 hours/day, and the average cost of total maintenance is $1,067 per flight hour, of which $205 is the cost of line maintenance. Also, line maintenance services need to be performed every 100-150 flight hours. In 2014, it was estimated the total flight hours globally added up to 1.5 million hours, and this number is likely to reach 3.04 million hours by 2033. It is estimated that during the forecast period, on an average, an airline will spend around 14% of its revenue on aircraft maintenance, with approximately $900 on direct maintenance cost for every flight hour. Depending on the aircraft model, the cost per flight hour can range between $350 and $1,800. The increasing cost per flight hour will directly influence the cost of line maintenance and in turn, drive the market.

Further, the report states that advanced avionics, radical technological advancements in operational efficiency, and improvement in noise reduction capabilities are driving the need to add updated technologies in the aircraft during maintenance. Although new aircraft are already functioning with the latest technologies, the composites and structures of the old aircraft fail to be compatible with advanced manufacturing technologies like new electrical systems. These changes have not only created a problem in the upgrading of old aircraft, but have also created challenges across the supply chain.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
