Electroactive polymers (EAP) are a new type of polymers that display significant shapes or displacement as a response to external electrical stimuli. Commenting on the report, an analyst said: “One trend in market is use of EAP for generating electricity. The UN estimated that tidal waves could generate 29,500 terawatt-hours of energy each year. Research projects regarding energy harvesting from tidal waves using EAP-based systems are under progress. Using EAP-based systems will lower the production costs and improve the durability of the system. They are based on deformation of EAP, which absorbs energy from the tidal waves and converts them into electricity. They are also free of any mechanical absorbers, which was a reason for the failure of many Wave Energy Conversion (WEC) devices in the past. In addition, the power generators used for the generation of electricity from tidal waves require an energy transduction technology that operates efficiently over a range of frequencies.”

According to the report, one driver in market is increased use of touchscreens. Haptic technology in electronic devices allows the users to perceive touch sensations. An actuator made of EAP, which is embedded in the device, helps in creating this touch sensation and making it more realistic. Many consumer devices are equipped with this technology. This technology is gaining prominence due to the increase in competition among the vendors catering to the hand-held device market. This is because it helps in creating differentiation and enhances customer loyalty.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is limitations associated with dielectric polymers. The use of polymers with high dielectric constants and application of high electric fields cause large forces and strains. Dielectric EAP actuators require large electric fields (~100 V/mm) and can induce significant levels of strain of up to 10%-200%. The voltages used are close to the breakdown strength of the material. Therefore, a safety factor that lowers the potential of breakdown must be used. Dielectric polymers have a low elastic modulus and tend to exhibit deformation when subjected to an intense electric field. Using such high field levels for achieving a definite polymer thickness can be disadvantageous for many applications. Therefore, polymers with high dielectric constant are required to reduce the effect of the driving electric fields. Therefore, the low elastic modulus of dielectric elastomers hinders their applications in various fields.
