With spectrum becoming clogged and few operators working on higher frequency bands, the indoor radio frequency (RF) signal penetration is affected by fading and interference. However, the use of a signal booster cannot be helpful in all cases and is limited to network providers by the carrier. RF signal booster vendors are required to update their hardware as the telecommunication industry advances from 2G to 3G, 4G, and upcoming 5G.”

According to the report, from the demand perspective, the global mobile signal booster market is driven by the increasing development of real estate in public and private infrastructure such as universities, colleges, campuses, technology parks, and business parks. At all such locations, signal boosters are an ideal solution at a very cost-effective price. Though the deployment of DAS is also possible in such locations, it is a more expensive option as installing fiber cables and antennas among antenna modules and controllers is very labor intensive. All the cost of installation is typically borne by carrier providers, including the maintenance. As the overall market for building infrastructure is growing and carrier operators are looking for solutions that provide lower per head cost of operation, these signal boosters are finding increased adoption. Another reason for the adoption of mobile signal boosters at indoor locations is the cost to revenue ratio. Many operators look for cost-effective coverage solutions at places such as museums, halls, and other indoor areas and refrain from providing a complete DAS as the customer base at such locations is small and the average revenue per user (ARPU) from the serving site is low.

Further, the report states that as mobile signal boosters are the devices that amplify the required RF signal strength for consumers, in a number of cases the boosters can cause interference to operations of other public communication devices such as base transceiver station (BTS) and other radio frequency-generating devices. In the case of industrial signal boosters, the operators, mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), and carrier signal providers ensure that the booster operates in the permissible limit. However, when it comes to consumer signal boosters, it hampers the communication and operations of other organizations and signal providers in numerous occasions. In such cases, regulatory authorities such as FCC and ITU limit the development and sale of consumer signal boosters in many regions. This hampers the market for the consumer signal boosters. To overcome these limitations and extend the services to the end consumers, mobile network operators have proposed a number of requirements from the signal booster manufacturers.
