The reliability on turbines is a pre-requisite for the effective generation of power from the wind energy. Any failure of components will negatively affect the functioning of the entire system. A wind turbine is built by integrating various technologies and components from aeronautics, hydraulics, automation, and other functions. Major components involved in power generation in a wind turbine include the gearbox, generator, electrical, nacelle, rotor blades, and yaw systems. These wind turbine components require regular maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is development of airborne wind turbines. Traditionally, a wind turbine is fixed atop a wind tower. The turbine is then connected to a rotor, blades, and other components to generate electricity from the wind. However, the wind does not blow evenly across all the areas. This has prompted plants to install taller wind towers, as the wind blows more consistently at higher speeds at greater heights. This increases the power output. The increased height of the tower also adds to the upfront cost, which is already a barrier for wind power generation. To overcome such problems a new class of wind turbines has been developed called the Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES). These turbines can capture wind energy at a significantly higher altitude. By design, these turbines do not require a tower to be fixed upon. They are tethered by wires or ropes that hold the turbine steady and transfer the electricity generated to the base station located on the ground. Therefore, the development of AWES and its adoption is expected to have a negative impact on the wind tower market, although not immediately, but at a later stage.
