Enamel can be defined as a materials system which dries in air into a hard, glossy coating and can be solvent borne or water borne depending upon the formulation requirements. Water based enamels utilize water as the solvent medium. Enamel systems are typically used as a coating for external environments due to their enhanced wear resistance, glazing, corrosion protection and thermal protection with little change in dimensions. Water based enamel provide a range of benefits which include toughness, low friction, corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, electrical resistivity and insulation, thermal protection and increased lifespan of the substrate along with certain advantages over oil or solvent based enamel like quicker drying time, low volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions and ease of use and application. Water based enamels can be prepared using a variety of chemistries including acrylic, polyurethane and styrene butadiene among others. Globally, growing end-use industries and increasing demand for low VOC enamels due to environment concerns and stringent regulations are expected to be the key growth drivers for water based enamel market during the period of study.

Geographically, Asia-Pacific dominated the water based enamel market driven by high growth of major end use industries such as construction and furniture in the region. Asia-Pacific was followed by North America and Europe as second and third largest market for water based enamel market. Asia Pacific is projected to have the fastest growth as Asia-Pacific is witnessing a rapid rise in disposable income and purchasing power parity of the general population which in turn is expected to drive demand for consumer sales of water based enamels in developing nations such as China and India in this region.
