Varicose Veins also referred to as varicosities are swollen, blue, twisted veins that appear on the skin. These are often seen near the legs. High pressure in the veins and when one or more veins fail to close, varicose veins appear. They affect almost anyone regardless of age. However, they are most frequently seen in female population, obese population and generally over 45 years of age. Various causes for the occurrence of varicose vein include obesity, hereditary elements and standing or sitting for a long period of time. Risk of occurrence of varicose vein is high during pregnancy period because of large volume flow of blood which causes the expansion of walls.

Various methods are being adopted for the treatment of varicose veins of which endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is the majorly adopted technique as the success ratio and procedure adopted is often simple in comparison with others. EVLA uses high quality laser to heat up and close the veins under the guidance of duplex ultrasound. Radiofrequency Ablation Devices use electrical energy to generate heat affected veins and thus close them.

Varicose Vein Treatment Market

Laser ablation and Radiofrequency ablation are similar methods. In this laser ablation, laser generator, laser fiber, and console are used. The laser utilizes much focused light to generate heat. Another method used is surgical vein stripping, a surgical procedure, where specialists tie off the concerned vein and totally expel them from the leg through little cuts in the skin.

Demand for endovenous ablation treatments such as varicose vein treatment devices is anticipated to expand at a rapid pace in the next few years due to factors such as short treatment time, improved blood circulation, minimal invasion, and complete closure of the treated area. Ultrasound sclerotherapy devices have also been witnessing moderate demand owing to benefits such as time and cost efficiency, of reduced risk collateral damage to surrounding tissues, painless procedure, increased penetration, no requirement of anesthesia, fewer post-operative complications, less scarring, and minimal need for incisions during the procedure.

Asia Pacific will have the fastest growth, owing to a rapid increase in aging population; rise in consumer awareness; ease of treatment as a result of government policies; modernization of healthcare infrastructure; and growing medical tourism industry. This can be observed in developing nations such as China, and India in this region. Among all the treatments, the ultrasound and sclerotherapy segment is widely used in the varicose vein treatment market due to the larger benefits, minimal incision, and reduced scaring.
