About Automotive Remote Keyless Entry System

RKE systems were the first form of keyless entry technology introduced in automobiles. An RKE system consists of a key fob that is equipped with a transmitter, which communicates with the vehicle through radio frequency. The receiver installed in the vehicle captures the signal, decodes it, and then instructs the vehicle door to lock or unlock.

The key fobs of RKE systems are equipped with buttons that act as switches that initiate the locking or unlocking of the vehicle door when the driver pushes the button on the key fob. This was the first innovation in vehicle security systems and transformed how consumers entered or exited their vehicles. It was initially introduced in luxury vehicles but gradually entered mid-segment vehicles because of their popularity and convenience.

Since the adoption of keyless entry system, automakers have been focusing on expanding the functionality of this system by integrating with other vehicle components. During the late 2000’s one such add-on functionality was embedding engine ignition system with keyless entry by eliminating the mechanical key for starting the vehicle. The traditional ignition system required a mechanical key to connect two electric circuits that initiate the spark in the engine block which served the purpose of security and engine ignition, however the with the evolution of electronics, modern ignition system has transformed into a push button which drastically enhances convenience factor to the consumer. However, to pull in the security factor into this system, automakers have integrated keyless entry system with the push button ignition system i.e. the ignition system receives singles from the fob to activate the ignition. Hence if the driver is not carrying the fob, the ignition system doesn’t activate.”

According to the report, one driver in market is comfort and convenience key drivers for adoption from demand side. The most important benefit of a keyless entry system is considered to be convenience. A driver can unlock or lock vehicle doors with little effort, which makes it faster to enter and exit the vehicle. In case of multiple people entering or exiting the vehicle, keyless entry systems offer a central locking mechanism where the driver can unlock or lock doors for everyone. With the evolution of RKE system, a driver can lock or unlock doors just by placing the key fob in the pocket leading to zero effort in entering or exiting the vehicle. With the reduced cost of such systems, the availability of this system in both OEM and aftermarket has increased, leading to higher adoption of this system in low and mid segment vehicles. Drivers also find this system most convenient during emergencies or harsh external weather conditions where quick entry into the vehicle is critical.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is insurance providers denying insurance for vehicles equipped with keyless entry system. Vehicle RKE systems saw rapid adoption due to the convenience they offered. However, they have turned into an easy pick in organized crime, with the availability of high tech key decoders in the black market making the task of breaking into a vehicle simple.
