The main topic of this study is multimodal imaging for medical applications. More precisely, technological fields defined as: "Any form of technology aiming at designing, developing, optimizing or testing a medical imaging technology combining at least two distinct imaging techniques" are explored.
By imaging techniques we mean any visual representation technique used to visualize structural of functional aspects of a living body. These techniques can be classified into modalities: Magnetic, Optical, Ultrasound, X-ray and Nuclear imaging. Technologies aiming at monitoring physiological parameters (temperature, electrical activity…) are excluded.
Many complex challenges appear when combining imaging modalities. To embrace all of them in this multisource landscape, we span every technological aspects of multimodal imaging, and analyze technologies dealing with Contrast agents, Image Processing methods, and Devices, from lab developments to in vivo applications.
The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the technical ecosystem associated to these technologies based on 2451 patent families, 12082 scientific publications and 62 EU research projects (time period: 2005 to 2016).
