The total CVC market includes both acute and chronic CVCs. Overall market decreases are due to declines in both the sale of chronic CVC and acute CVC market. Competing devices, mainly PICCs, have substantially eroded growth in sales of CVCs. Unit sales have been on a slow but steady decline in Australia for the last several years; these increases are expected to continue over the forecast period as the adoption for competing products such as PICCs continue to grow exponentially across the globe. As unit sales growth slows, companies are decreasing their prices in order to maintain market share, this increases the rate at which the market is declining. Additionally, CVCs are perceived to have a higher infection rate than other long-dwelling catheters such as PICCs and many manufacturers offer antimicrobial or antibacterial CVCs to try to counteract this higher infection risk. However, these devices have been available for a long period of time. Their usage is not expected to increase significantly.
