About Unmanned Sea System

Unmanned sea systems are remotely controlled or pre-programmed autonomous water vehicles. They are mainly classified into two: unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). Globally, the Navy uses unmanned sea systems for underwater mapping missions, surveillance, and as surface targets during naval exercises or to clear naval mines.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is emergence of 3D printing and composite materials. 3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, is an evolving technology that helps manufacturers design and create things in successive layers of materials, which are formed using computer controlled technology. However, the process of 3D printing composite materials is not conventional; yet several companies have begun to use print technologies for submarines and other naval vessel parts and components manufacturing. For instance, in February 2016, two Netherlands-based entrepreneurs, demonstrated a prototype version of six-meter plastic submarine that was made using 3D printing technology. It is still in the trial phase, and as claimed by the developers, this submarine can be used for military and oil platform applications.”

According to the report, one driver in market is predisposition for the deployment of UUVs. The demand for UUVs is increasing for naval intelligence; mine countermeasures (MCM); intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance roles; and anti-submarine warfare missions. The naval forces predominantly deploy two types of UUVs: AUVs and ROVs. ROVs are connected to a surface naval vessel via cables that are controlled manually, whereas AUVs are fully autonomous in function. In naval operations, these UUVs are specially designed and deployed for underwater surveillance, hull inspections, dock inspections, and underwater mines deactivation.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is increasing investments for deploying manned submarines. Since the World War II, the underwater platforms have been one of the most effective instruments in targeting and destroying naval and land-based military platforms/assets from far-off locations. The modern submarines are deployed for unleashing a barrage of nuclear or conventional weapons against land-based and ocean-going enemy targets. Also, these platforms are quite capable of countering enemy submerged platforms. Submarines are also used for providing assistance to special forces in covert operations. Thus, global naval agencies are using these platforms predominantly as a deterrent element in their territorial waters. However, increasing investments in manned attack submarines would have a proportionate negative impact on the unmanned sea systems market, primarily for the UUVs segment.
