According to the report, most traditional chelating agents such as EDTA are poorly biodegradable. These chelating agents do not get absorbed in the soil surface in the environment. These chelating agents even resist degradation in activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants. Owing to this poor biodegradability combined with high water solubility, traditional chelators such as DTPA, EDTA, HEDTA, and organophosphates are readily released into the environment and have been detected in the rivers and lakes as well as in make-up water processed for drinking water.

Further, the report states that although, conventionally used chelating agents such as aminopolycarboxylic acids and other organophosphates pose environmental threats, the performance of green chelating agents is incomparable with them. For instance, when sodium gluconate is used as a chelating agent instead of EDTA, the concentration of sodium gluconate to be used is much higher than the concentration of EDTA used for the same purpose. The low efficacy of green chelating agents is attributed to their lower stability compared with the conventionally used chelating agents, which offer high stability and integrity.
