Market Insights

The global spray dried food market was valued at over USD XX billion in 2016 and is expected to reach USD XX billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. Spray drying is a method of producing dried food by rapidly supplying hot air. It is the most preferred method for drying of many thermally-sensitive materials, especially in the food industry and pharmaceuticals. The spray drying technology is a breakthrough in science, which offers several merits over other drying technologies.

Market Dynamics

The primary factor driving this market is its versatility and speed. This technique’s one-step ability to complete the drying process, within seconds, gives it an edge over other available industrial drying techniques, like the fluidized bed drying technique. It is a versatile process and adaptable to a wide-range of industries and their feedstock and product specifications. Spray drying produces dried food of controllable particle size and good quality and can also manipulate few characteristics of food particles like bulk density, the degree of crystallinity and moisture content levels. These controlling parameters make spray dried food process desirable for the food industry. High demand from the dairy industry is a major driving factor for the spray drying market, as it is more suitable for milk and milk products. Moreover, spray drying is apt for obtaining products in a powdered form, as they do not agglomerate. Other dried powder techniques (such as drum drying), require milling before packaging, while spray dried powders do not require any further milling before packaging.

Even though it is economical than freeze-dried technique, the equipment and continuous operation of spray drying leads to enormous costs. Main and auxiliary equipment are equally expensive, regardless of atomizer type and dryer capacity. Additionally, spray dryers that utilize two-fluid nozzles require compressed gas for atomizing, which results in higher prices. This is the primary constraint for this market. Other restraints hindering this market are maintenance issues of the machinery - like the nozzle used, cleaning costs and competition from other types of techniques.

The global spray dried food market is segmented by the type. This includes spray dried dairy products, spray dried fruits, spray dried meat products, spray dried vegetables and others. Among all these segments, dairy products are expected to account for the largest market share, followed by meat products. Moreover, the spray dried fruits and spray dried vegetable segments are expected to have a decent growth during the forecast period. This is due to the rising demand for seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Regional Analysis

The spray food market is also segmented by region. Globally, North America is expected to have a dominant market share. In North America, the U.S is projected to be the major contributor regarding market revenue, followed by Canada. Increased consumption of meat products in North America is expected to boost the demand for spray food products across this region. European countries are also anticipated to be among the prominent contributors to the spray food products market regarding revenue, followed by Asia-Pacific.

Future Spotlight

Multistage processes, new spray techniques, and temperature-gradient systems hold promise for the future pharmaceutical application. The spray dried market seems to have reached a sustainable level of activity around the globe, but there is great scope to carry out innovations in future. Reducing costs of spraying machinery, energy costs and efficiency will be the key principles for marketing of dryers. New spray drying techniques involve temperature gradient systems and multi-stage processing for quality control. Targeting these product categories can prove to be potential benefits for the market.
