Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is the rapid evolution in microelectronics. The size of electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptops is getting smaller day by day. Earlier phones used to be big and there were only desktops. Now cell phones have become so small that they fit inside one’s palm and desktops have given way to laptops that can be conveniently carried around everywhere. The growing requirement of purified water for UPW systems is aiding the evolution of devices and FAB plants.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is increase in semiconductor wafer size. Over the past 40 years, the size of the silicon wafer used in the global semiconductor industry had increased from 100 mm to 300 mm as this reduces the cost of manufacturing by at least 20%-25%. Currently, the size of wafer used in integrated circuits is 300 mm and this size is expected to remain the same until the forecast period. Semiconductor manufacturers are investing heavily to upgrade and construct new FABs for this wafer size. For instance, in 2015, SK hynix started building an M14 FAB for 300 mm technology in Korea. Meanwhile, the demand for 200 mm wafer is also expected to grow because of its use in devices such as sensors, microcontrollers, display drivers, and a few micro-electro-mechanical systems-based products like accelerometers.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is the stringent validation requirements. Regulatory compliance standards are the most significant challenge faced by the high-purity water industry. Both the equipment manufacturers and end-users need to invest a high amount of workforce, capital, time, and energy to adhere to these standards. Regulatory compliance includes different levels of validations, equipment design specifications, and documentation standards.
