One way to achieve this is by upgrading the cabling infrastructure, which will be very expensive. Another way is to deploy 40 Gbps and100 Gbps QFSP transceiver modules that allow the reuse of the existing 10-Gbps Ethernet/optical fiber infrastructure for 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps connections.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is the strategic collaboration among supply chain members. The rapidly growing IoT market, proliferation of data and video traffic, enterprise IP/Internet traffic are driving the need for high bandwidth. Therefore, supply chain members are making strategic collaborations to develop and design a common standard for optical transceivers to meet the product requirements for the next-generation data centers. In 2014, around 20 companies led by Intel and Arista Networks formed an open, optical specification for 100 Gbps optical transceivers known as100G CRL4 Alliance.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is the high cost of QSFP transceiver modules. The service providers are migrating to 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps speed because of the increase in the Internet IP traffic. Though the QSFP module enables the service providers to increase bandwidth requirements on the same network, the high ASP of QSFP modules and the deployment of new optical equipment that are not suitable for 40/100G networks present a major cost challenge. The exhibit below provides the price of QSFP and SFP modules for different data rates and wavelengths. From this table, it can be observed that the price of QSFP modules is very high for 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps QSFP modules, while the price of four 10G SPF modules, which can be used for supporting 40 Gbps speed, is very less.
