They are connected by pulleys, cables, bellcranks, and push-pull tubes to a control wheel or control stick. Ailerons are usually placed in pairs and move in opposite directions during operation. Adaptive aileron is one of the new concepts that can impact next-generation aircraft. Italy and Canada together came up with this concept. A number of European projects such as Clean Sky JTI and SARISTU demonstrated that the wing trailing edge morphing can facilitate significant drag reduction (up to 6%) in off-design flight points. This can be made possible through chordwise camber variations in the airfoil of a wing to leverage A/C weight reduction, which in turn will bring down fuel consumption. Therefore, researchers are trying to use the flap region to implement the necessary structural adaptations. This led to the consideration of using morphing techniques in ailerons without deviating from its main functionality in ensuring aircraft's longitudinal stability.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is the next-generation aircraft with fly-by-wire technology. Historically, the cockpit controls and flight controllable surfaces of the aircraft wing and tail were controlled manually through hydraulic and mechanical linkages. With the advent of fly-by-wire technology, the aircraft flight control surfaces have been automated. Using fly-by-wire technology, the pilot's commands are transmitted electronically through a network of actuators placed on the wings and tail of the aircraft. The integration of this system has significantly reduced aircraft weight along with a reduction in complexities in aircraft manual controls. It also influenced a greater degree of reliability, fuel efficiency, and safety of aircraft. It has also been widely adopted by aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus. To avoid deviating from the safe operating range, they have adopted a technique called as flight envelope.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is the electromechanical actuators issues. EMAs have developed over the years and have given a fierce competition to hydraulic actuators. Manufacturers have incorporated magnetic materials that improve performance through efficient and small power electronics and enhanced gear technology.
