About Colonoscopy Devices

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the large intestine and the distal part of the small bowel by using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a fiberoptic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. Colonoscopy is considered as the gold standard of colorectal cancer screening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Colonoscopy helps to find colon polyps, ulcers, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. Depending on initial findings, screenings should be performed every 5-10 years thereafter. During a colonoscopy procedure, tissue samples are collected to find abnormal growths in the intestine. The colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube, which is in the range of 125 cm-183 cm long size. A small video camera is fixed to the colonoscopy devices, so that the physician can take pictures or video of the colon. The colonoscopy devices can be used to look at the whole colon and the lower part of the small intestine.

The analysts forecast the global colonoscopy devices market to grow at a CAGR of 4.63% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Colonoscopy Devices Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global colonoscopy devices market: Boston Scientific, Fujifilm Holdings, HOYA Group, KARL STORZ, and OLYMPUS.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ANA-MED, Avantis Medical Systems, Endomed Systems, Getinge Group, GI-View, HUGER Medical Instrument, InMotion Medical, invendo medical, Jindal Medical, MedServ Technologies, Norgine, SMART Medical Systems, SonoScape Medical, and US Endoscopy.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is emergence of virtual colonoscopy devices. The emergence of virtual colonoscopy will likely change the market dynamics, as it can improve the patient compliance and adherence. Virtual colonoscopy is an X-ray test, which takes less time, and does not require inserting a scope into the entire length of the colon. With the use of virtual colonoscopy, colon polyps are found by the less invasive approach and can be removed using conventional colonoscopy. Some of the other advantages of virtual colonoscopies include less procedure time, increased accessibility (can be used in individuals who have limited mobility and cannot tolerate traditional colonoscopy procedures), improved detection, and safer than conventional colonoscopies. Virtual colonoscopy is recommended for average-risk individuals over 50 years of age. Physicians are also looking to improve the screening rates for colorectal cancer through the use of virtual colonoscopy.”

According to the report, one driver in market is presence of large patient pool with intestinal disorders. The presence of large patient pool with intestinal disorders is expected to drive the market growth. The growing incidence of intestinal disorders such as colon cancer, GI hemorrhage, ulceration, and polyps is also expected to propel the market growth. In the past few years, there has been a rise in morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases such as colon cancer, rectal cancer, and GI bleeding-related disorders. For instance, according to the CDC statistics in 2014 report, 142,870 people in the US were affected by colorectal cancer, of which 60,450 people died annually. Also, according to the CDC, in the US alone, about 140,000 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2014. The increased prevalence of intestinal diseases among the population has boosted the frequency of diagnostic screening procedures being performed. Thus, the growing incidence of intestinal disorders is expected to drive the demand for colonoscopy devices market.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is complications associated with the use of colonoscopy devices. Growing complications involved in the use of colonoscopy devices pose a challenge in the market. The adverse events linked with colonoscopy procedure stood at 2.8 per 1,000 procedures. More than 85% of the serious colonoscopy complications are witnessed in individuals undergoing colonoscopy with polypectomy. Colonoscopy for the diagnosis of polypectomy has been witnessing an increased risk of bleeding or perforation over the years. Most of the colonoscopy adverse events occur during the first week. Colonoscopy may also cause slight discomforts such as bloating and cramping. Some of the other complications involved in the colonoscopy procedure include bowel wall perforation or tears, bleeding and bloody bowel movements, infections, and adverse events to sedatives.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
