About TV

The global TV market has observed a shift from bulky CRT TVs to flat panel LCD and OLED TVs over the past decade. Consumer are preferring large-screen TVs as they have become a status symbol nowadays. It is expected that TVs with display size ranging between 50 and 59 inch will have the fastest adoption rate during the forecast period. This is because larger screens provide better viewing experience and customers prefer them for aesthetics. However, the changing consumer preferences for screen sizes and technology lead to the imbalance in demand and supply of display panels and driver integrated circuits (ICs), which poses a challenge to manufacturers. The under capacity or overcapacity by electronic device manufacturers leads to fluctuations in demand for semiconductor components, which leads to increased inventory thus affecting an overall revenue of the market.

The analysts forecast the global TV market to grow at a CAGR of 9.62% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global TV Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global TV market: Hisense, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, and Sony.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Funai Electric, Haier, Koninklijke Philips, Konka, Micromax Informatics, Onida Electronics, Mitashi, Sansui Electric, Seiki Digital, Sharp, Sichuan Changhong Electric, Skyworth Digital, TCL, Toshiba, Videocon, Xiaomi, VIZIO, and Westinghouse Digital.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is growing number of Chinese players. The increasing productivity and efficiency of Chinese players is posing a threat to the well-established players in South Korea and Taiwan. For instance, Novatek, a Taiwan-based leading manufacturer and supplier of driver ICs to the UHD TV manufacturers, is likely to lose its share to Himax Technologies by 2017-2018, a Chinese manufacturer of driver ICs. This is because Himax has a larger share of the Chinese TV market. Himax is likely to dominate the UHD TV market in the future. In 2016, Chinese players such as CSoT, Nanjing CEC Panda LCD Technology, and BOE Technology Group have exceeded one million unit shipments of LCD TVs per month. These companies are investing heavily in their facilities to enhance their production capacity. The government is supporting them by increasing the import duty on LCD and LED TVs, which has resulted in an increase in the price of foreign brands.”

According to the report, one driver in market is higher attraction for large display sizes. The advanced UHD technology is best experienced on large screens. The larger the screen, the better is the clarity and quality of pictures. Large screens give better viewing angles and visual experiences and can be watched clearly from a longer distance compared to small- or medium-sized displays. Display size has also become a part of aesthetics nowadays. Individuals prefer TVs with 55 inch and above display sizes to suit their house interiors. As 4K content does not pixelate, the demand for large-screen UHD TVs is increasing. Content providers such as Netflix have already started streaming TV series with 4K contents such as Breaking Bad. However, for an uninterrupted streaming, users should have at least 15 Mbps or above broadband speed. As UHD TVs support smart functionalities, users can stream videos on them directly from the Internet.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is discrepancy in demand-supply ratio of LCD panels. The high discrepancy in the demand and supply ratio of LCD panels is the major challenge faced by manufacturers. Panel makers are increasingly facing issues with capacity conversions, growth in the average display size, and a strong Chinese market. Consumers are moving toward adopting TVs with large display panels. As a result of which, small- to medium-sized display panels are becoming obsolete, incurring a loss to manufacturers. Panel makers, such as AU Optronics, LG Display, and Innolux, are focusing on increasing their efficiency, while OEMs want to increase their market share and revenue. Thus, the discrepancy in demand and supply ratio and the expansion in display sizes have induced OEMs to adjust their product mix.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
