Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is IM and other technologies with magnet-free architecture. The current technology that is mainly adopted in the electric motor is PMSMs. This is owing to the high torque density and peak efficiency obtained in addition to its long-existing principle of using rare earth elements. However, the use of rare earth elements, such as neodymium and dysprosium, for the creation of permanent magnets in these motors increases their cost resulting in an overall price increase of the electric powertrain. The average price of subcomponents in the PMSM for a 30-kW power rated motor is given below. The rare earth element price constitutes more than 70% of the total cost of these motors. The steel laminations and copper windings used in the stator side of the motor contribute to nearly 30% of the total cost. As the power rating of motor increases, the amount of rare earth element used increases to create much higher magnetic field, creating permanent magnets.”

According to the report, one driver in market is reduced power losses with use of DDM improve driving range and performance of EVs. Unlike a conventional ICE vehicle, the range and emission levels in EVs depend on their electric powertrain control systems. Motors play a major role in controlling the electric powertrain. During acceleration, the controller sends signal to the inverter to convert the DC from the battery to AC for the electric motor, as needed. The amount of power needed is sensed while actuating the accelerator pedal by the user.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is unsprung weight concerns in direct drive system. One of the major challenges in the adoption of DDM system is the increase in weight of electric motors, which, in turn, increases the unsprung weight of the vehicle. This has a negative impact on the vehicle handling with respect to road conditions, especially riding over bumps at high speed. The wheels become sluggish and transmit these vibrations to the chassis instead of absorbing them. Most electric motors have ferrous material laminated with electrical steel, which is the main reason behind the increased weight of the motors. Even though developments are taking place to reduce the amount of steel used to bring down the weight of the motor, currently commercially available electric motors are heavier, increasing the unsprung mass in the direct drive vehicles.
