Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is achieving appropriate ratio of voltage and energy gap. Solar cell with a small energy gap is capable of absorbing most photons but generates low voltage, and similarly, a cell with a larger energy gap generates a higher voltage but allows lower-energy photons to pass. Till date, achieving the ideal ratio between these parameters have been challenging to the researchers, which in turn, proved to be a barrier to the commercialization of several promising technologies.”

According to the report, one driver in market is availability of large areas of unused land within airports. An airport is usually spread over large areas to accommodate runway for flights. For instance, the Denver International Airport in Colorado, US, Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, US, and the Dubai International Airport in the UAE are spread across 33,531 acres, 12,000 acres, 7,200 acres of land, respectively. A significant portion of this widespread area is left unused to provide an unobstructed view for take-off and landing of flights. In addition, the terrace tops of terminals and parking areas are left unused. Such vast lands can be put to use while allowing undisturbed flight operations.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is high cost of silicon. Globally, an increasing use of PV cells for energy generation has been observed. Installation of renewable energy systems in airports is happening at the latter end of use of solar cells. PV systems and solar cells have already found large-scale applications by governments for lightings of rural areas, street lights and for water heating purposes in apartments and hotels. These uses have contributed to the large-scale consumption of silicon, which is one of the prime elements in the construction of solar panels. Though silicon is the earth’s second most common element and contributes to more than 25% of the Earth's extracted element in the solid state, there has been an upward curve with respect to its prices. This, in turn, has led to increasing prices of solar panels and cells.
