About Automotive Diecast Scale Model

Diecast scale models are models of actual production cars, vintage cars, as well as bikes, which are marketed in a variety of scale ranges as collectibles. These are targeted to different audiences, ranging from collectors to amateurs. Usually, diecast models are created on a body-on-frame basis, even though the originals may be monocoque or unibody. This is due to the relative ease of both construction and assembly with a body-on-frame, where only the body is created using the diecasting process, whereas the chassis and interiors are made of separate plastic or metallic components.

The analysts forecast the global automotive diecast scale model market to grow at a CAGR of 5.27% during the period 2017-2021.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is an increasing reliance on grandiose showmanship for championing the case of diecast scale models and their real-life counterparts. One-off models are nothing new to the diecast scale model space. One-off models with a $4.8 million starting bid price at Sotheby’s or Christie’s are, however, quite rare, especially since the model in question is also a 1:8 scale model of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4. Arguably the most expensive scale car model, which is made by former Mercedes-Benz engineer Robert Gulpen, comes wrapped in authentic carbon fiber and gold, with gold and platinum interior. The model even comes with its own specially made bulletproof case, for those worried about its safety. The high price is backed up by the high initial cost — all that gold and platinum, along with other materials cost the manufacturer a total of $2.8 million, which itself is a record of sorts.”

According to the report, one driver in market is positive influence of collectors' clubs on sales of collectible diecast scale models. Collectors' clubs worldwide are actively engaged in the study of and proliferation of their respectable collectibles. Hence, they largely influence buddying diecast model enthusiasts. Furthermore, collectors' clubs also organize model display events and auctions where like-minded diecast enthusiasts can meet and exchange information, as well as strike business deals. These clubs are like any other exclusive club, with members-only access. Most of these clubs (mostly concentrated in the US and Europe) function on the lines of the usual Ivy League college society scene, with a distinct hierarchy of members. New members usually grow in stature with tenure, and the number of connections formed both inside and outside the clubs decide the sphere of influence of any member.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is diecast scale model value discovery becomes a challenge in the absence of a base price. As discussed in the section on market drivers, the resale value of diecast models usually depends on two primary factors: the base price or the original purchase price, and a resale premium or appreciation value. While the premium or appreciation value may be determined by the model's exclusivity or demand, the base price is usually fixed, with the original sales price forming the maximum portion of the value discovery process. This dependency on the sales price generally becomes a challenge for the appraiser or valuator, since sales prices need to be written on a legally recognized tender to be viable. Most antique and collectors' shops (especially in emerging economies like India) are in the unorganized sector and do not issue bills as legal tender. They sometimes give handwritten notes, or even none. Hence, these handwritten notes, when used for valuation purposes, create a veil of subjectivity, leading to ambiguity in the valuation process.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
