About Adaptive Optics

Adaptive optics technology helps improve the performance of optical systems by decreasing the effect of wavefront distortions. The deformations in the incoming wavefront are corrected by adaptive optics by deforming a mirror to compensate the distortion. Adaptive optics technology is popular in astronomical telescopes and laser communication systems to negate the effects of atmospheric distortion. Adaptive optics measures the distortions in a wavefront and compensates them with a device that rectifies errors such as a deformable mirror or a liquid crystal array.

Hartmann-Shack and interferometric are the commonly used wavefront sensors. Researchers at the University College Dublin (Ireland) developed a wavefront sensor based on plasmonic quasiparticles. It can measure wavefront slopes across a beam of light at a nanoscale level. This is different from Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensors, which can sample the wavefront at lateral distances of more than 100 μm. Unlike interferometric methods of wavefront sensing, the quasiparticle method requires the measurement of only a single wavefront and does not require two separate wavefronts to be in phase.”
