Traditionally used polymers offer poor electrical conduction and act as excellent dielectrics and insulators. To overcome this, conductive powders such as silver, gold, and graphite are added in a polymer matrix. However, this technique results in deterioration of polymer properties and high cost. Since the inception of electrically conductive polymers, the scientific community has shown immense interest in it. Polymers can be made conductive through doping. Doping levels are varied while the mechanical flexibility and high thermal stability of polymers remain unaffected.

As per the calculations done by the UN, waves can generate 29,500 terawatt-hours a year. Research is being conducted for harvesting energy from sea waves using EAP-based systems. Using conductive polymers-based systems will lower the production costs and improve the durability of the system. The EAP systems are based on deformation of conductive polymers, which absorbs wave energy and converts into electricity. They are also free of any mechanical absorbers, which was a reason for the failure of many Wave Energy Conversion (WEC) devices in the past. Also, for ocean wave power generators, there is a need for using an energy transduction technology that operates over a range of frequencies.”
