Increasing penetration of spinal stimulation devices used as adjunctive therapy will remain the primary growth driver. Additionally, cervical stimulation devices will account for the majority of the growth due their more recent emergence onto the market in 2005, and the higher growth rate of cervical fusion procedures. Similar to its lumbar counterpart, the cervical electrical stimulation market will primarily be driven by the increased penetration of adjunct use in fusion procedures. Favorable clinical studies also contribute positively to the growth of this market.

However, industry players also continue to follow improvements in synthetic materials which may reduce the need for electrical stimulation. Unit sales growth will be augmented by the higher growth rates experienced by the cervical fusion market, in contrast to the lumbar fusion market. However, growth factors and developments in synthetics used in fusion procedures, and motion preservation technologies will limit future market growth. Motion preservation implants compete directly with spinal fusion procedures and as growth factors offer a viable bone healing substitute to electrical stimulation devices. Cervical artificial discs are expected to experience particularly strong growth over the forecast period, which will lead to a reduction in growth in the cervical fusion market. The price will remain relatively stable due to the lack of competitive pricing pressures. Electrical stimulation devices are used for stimulating bone growth after a spinal fusion procedure. Spinal electrical bone growth stimulators are often used as an adjunct therapy in order to increase the chance of a successful solid spinal fusion. In the United States, electrical stimulation devices are designed specifically for lumbar and cervical fusions. However, some lumbar devices have historically been used off-label to augment the healing process for cervical fusion procedures.
