A nanowire is a nanostructure, which can range from 40 to 100 billionths of a meter in diameter and up to 10 millionths of a meter in length. It is the building block for next-generation electronics, photonics, sensors, and energy applications. Nanowires are created on a flat substrate of semiconductor materials, such as silicon and germanium. They are composed of metals such as silver, gold, or iron. A nanowire is a nanostructure, which can range from 100 billionths of a meter in diameter and 10 millionths of a meter in length. They are the building blocks of next-generation electronics, photonics, sensors, and energy applications. There are different types of nanowires available in the global market, which include metallic nanowires (e.g., Ni, Pt, and Au), superconducting nanowires [e.g., yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO], semiconducting nanowires (e.g., Si, InP, and GaN), and insulating nanowires (e.g., SiO2 and TiO2).

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is increasing applications of nanowires in environment and healthcare applications. A nanowire mat that is similar to paper is being tested as a new tool for the cleaning of oil and other organic pollutants. The scientists at MIT, US, claim to have created a membrane that can absorb oil around 20 times its weight and can be recycled many times for the future use. In addition to the absorption, the oil itself can also be recovered. More than 200,000 tons of oil have already been spilled at sea since 2005. An advantage of using nanowire paper is that it can also be inexpensive to manufacture. The composed nanowires can be fabricated in larger quantities when compared to other nanomaterials. There are also other materials that can absorb oils from water, but their selectivity is not as high as nanowire mats. Conventional materials still absorb some water, which make them less efficient for capturing the contaminant.”

According to the report, one driver in market is silver nanowires displaying potential as a replacement for ITO. Touchscreen displays mainly depend on electrodes made of ITO, a material that is brittle and expensive to source and process. In May 2016, a UK-based team from the University of Surrey, led by Alan Dalton, in partnership with M-SOLV, a touch-sensor manufacturer based in Oxford, UK, were searching for alternative materials to overcome the challenges of ITO. Graphene, carbon nanotubes, and metal nanowire films were considered for ITO replacements.

Silver nanowire films have improved transmittances and conductivities. They are made up of an interconnected network, which can be the strongest alternative to ITO. However, a new hybrid material consisting of silver nanowires that are linked together with graphene has proven to be even better than silver nanowires. The hybrid material is less expensive because only a fraction of the nanowires is normally required to attain the properties of ITO. The graphene can provide a link between the nanowires. The graphene is deposited onto a sprayed network of nanowires by film deposition.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is high production cost of nanowires. Semiconductor nanowires are important materials in the development of cheaper and more efficient solar cells, as well as for batteries with higher storage capacity. In addition, they are important building blocks in nanoelectronics. However, production of semiconductor nanowires on an industrial scale is expensive. The major reason for this is the use of expensive catalysts, such as gold, and high temperatures at which they are manufactured (600-900 ºC). Si or Ge nanowires will be indispensable for many technical applications in the future. Gold is usually used as a catalyst, as it can dissolve a lot of Si or Ge when molten. Scientists and researchers are working on a method to produce semiconductor nanowires using cheap catalysts like aluminum at a much lower temperature of only 150 ºC.
