Europe has the highest GDI engine penetration. In this region, Germany leads with a penetration rate of 50% of gasoline cars. OEMs have been strategizing to improve fuel economy and power output of their vehicles by using GDI engines. Recent trends show that OEMs are introducing turbochargers and GDI in downsized engines for enhancing their power output and fuel economy.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is rise in the switching cost from port injection system to direct injection system. The direct injection system helps in increasing the fuel efficiency of vehicles. However, there are some disadvantages of switching from the port injection system to the direct injection system. In the direct injection system, the tip of the injector is mounted in the combustion chamber itself and is exposed to high pressure. Thus, the designing and materials that are used for manufacturing the injector should be of high quality, which will incur more costs.
