A tourniquet is a compressing device used to control or resist blood flow during accidents or surgical procedures. Pressure is applied circumferentially to the skin and the underlying tissues of a limb; this pressure causes a temporary occlusion. Tourniquets are segmented into two types based on product type -- pneumatic and non-pneumatic tourniquets. In March 2015, Pyng Medical launched the MATResponder Elite, a new tourniquet that provides high levels of safety and reliability for the patient while transporting to the clinics. In November 2016, Manhasset's Feinstein Institute for Medical Research developed a neural tourniquet that harnesses electrical nerve stimulation to decrease blood loss. Also, in September 2016, Smart data Medical launched the Tensrite single-use tourniquets, which offer sterile options to protect surgeons and patients from infections. This product could be an effective alternative in halting hemorrhaging during and after childbirth, a major cause of maternal death worldwide. This could be a drugless answer to postpartum bleeding. Such research activities will drive the market growth.”

This device can be buckled around an individual’s abdomen, over the belly button, and then tightened. A hand pump is used to inflate a wedge-shaped bladder, which displaces the bowel and compresses the individual’s aorta against the spine, stopping all blood flow to the lower body.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is increasing complications associated with the tourniquets. The increasing complications associated with the use of tourniquets hamper the market growth. For instance, some of the complications associated with tourniquet use include muscle/nerve injury, gangrene, ischemia, compartmental syndrome, amputation, and death. This usually appears when tourniquets are left in place too long, released outside of medical care, improvised, used unnecessarily, and used incorrectly.

Few of the complications associated with pneumatic tourniquets include nerve injury, which is the most common complication resulting from the use of tourniquets during upper extremity surgeries. It can also occur in the thigh and lower leg during cuff applications. The nerve injury can range from a moderate transient loss of function to permanent and irreversible damage. Symptoms of nerve injury include the inability to detect heat, pain, cold, or pressure over the skin. Limb paralysis is also referred to as tourniquet paralysis syndrome. Approximately 50% of all post-tourniquet swelling cases are caused by blood returning to the limb, following the release of the tourniquet.
