A neurovascular stent is a small, flexible, tube-like device made of fabric supported by a metal mesh. It is used to treat several conditions in the brain such as stenosis formation in the blood vessels and ischemic stroke, and aneurysm. Neurovascular stents are segmented into two types based on product types such as carotid artery stents and intracranial stents. Carotid artery stents segment contributed for a major share of the market, and intracranial stents segment is expected to grow at a higher rate.

The analysts forecast the global neurovascular stents market to grow at a CAGR of 13.02% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Neurovascular Stents Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global neurovascular stents market: Abbott Laboratories, Medtronic, Stryker, and Terumo Medical.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Acandis, Blockade Medical, Codman Neurovascular (Johnson & Johnson), Cordis, Gore Medical, InspireMD, MicroPort Scientific, and STI Laser Industries.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is growing research activities coupled with new product launches. The increasing research activities are expected to bring innovative products to the market thereby driving the adoption rates of neurovascular stents. For instance, the market has witnessed positive outcomes of the CREST on the use of stents for treating standard-risk procedures. Also, the growing focus of vendors to develop stents with new technology will drive the market growth in the future. For instance, the nitinol-based stents in the neurovascular space are developed for application to a support structure to embolic coil mass during the treatment of the intracranial aneurysms.

Neuroform (Stryker) and Enterprise (Johnson & Johnson) stents are some of the popular stents in the market. Using the conventional stainless material technology, these stents could only be developed with minimum strut width of around 60 to 75 microns. Due to this, these stents have too large a pore size to provide adequate support to the coil mass. In the treatment of wide-neck aneurysms, these stents have limitations in their ability to secure the coil mass, thereby raising the risk of coil herniation into the parent artery. Therefore, research organizations and vendors have focused on developing advanced nitinol based stents to address those limitations.”

According to the report, one driver in market is growing use of nitinol-based neurovascular stents. The use of materials in stents plays an important role as they offer many advantages for the processes and support therapeutic devices. The nitinol alloy material (nickel and titanium) allows manufacturers to achieve unique characteristics in undergoing a phase transformation when subjected to temperature changes, external forces, and mechanical loading. Also, this material offers greater shape memory and provides superelasticity by retaining its structure after a significant strain deformation. Nitinol, when compared to other materials such as stainless steel and polymers, provides excellent biocompatibility, recovering elongation, visibility, and radiopacity (radiodensity) under X-ray fluoroscopy.

For instance, self-expandable nitinol stent is placed inside a narrowed carotid artery, which passes blood to the brain, to improve the flow of the blood and prevent the artery from collapsing after the procedure. Self-expanding stents eliminate the requirement for high-pressure expansion making nitinol ideal for neurovascular stents. Some of the few players that offer nitinol based stents include Stryker, Medtronic, and MicroPort Scientific.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is complications associated with neurovascular stent procedures. A wide range of neurovascular applications provides effective results for stroke, stenosis, malformation, and brain aneurysm disease. The risks involved in the management of these diseases are very complex. The lack of skilled neurosurgeons to perform complicated neuro-endovascular procedures, the lack of standardized training guidelines and the complexity of procedures such as cerebral artery bypass and aneurysm stenting may lead to surgical complications such as bleeding and rupturing during neurovascular stents. Patients undergoing minimally invasive valve surgeries have shown post-procedural complications such as thrombosis, chronic inflammation, and in-stent restenosis. Also, patients in need of prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy face the risk of bleeding, and this increases the financial and psychological burden on patients.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
