Lighting systems are mainly used for providing visual convenience during night travels and for representing different signals in a locomotive. Lighting systems for locomotives are different from the conventional lighting systems used in automotive, aircraft, or marine applications. Front lighting systems developed for locomotives must be able to function effectively in harsh weather conditions like snow and fog, wherein the possibility of the light lamp getting covered by snow or ice is high.

In addition, the locomotive headlamps are subject to vibrations from the locomotive. Hence, the locomotive front lighting systems are made to withstand vibrations and provide illumination as well as signaling. The European Commission has formulated a number of regulations governing the electronics used for locomotive lighting systems and luminosity of the locomotive headlamps.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “OEMs are increasingly replacing incandescent bulbs and halogen lights with LED headlights as LED bulbs have a high lifespan, which is about 10% higher than incandescent bulbs. In addition, LED bulbs can operate without any extra maintenance. LEDs operate at a lower temperature as compared to incandescent bulbs, which significantly helps the lighting systems to have a higher operational life than conventional locomotive lighting systems. LEDs are estimated to have about 100,000 hours of operational capacity, whereas an incandescent bulb has about 5,500 hours of life. Hence, LEDs are considered to be highly reliable as compared with other types of locomotive lighting.”

According to the report, public transportation provides comfortable and cheaper means of travel wherein the passengers can avoid difficulties of negotiating through heavy traffic conditions on the road. In addition, governments are encouraging the use of public transport for reducing the number of vehicles on the roads and thereby reduce traffic congestion and vehicular pollution. Government bodies are developing alternative modes of cheap public transport to decrease the dependency of public on roads.

Further, the report states that the majority of the freight is transported by the roads. Roads offer the convenience of connectivity that cannot be guaranteed in the case of rail. Rails have limited loading and unloading stations, which greatly discourages freight operators from opting for railroads for freight transport. In addition, the additional costs incurred in loading and unloading of cargo at the train stations and transportation for connecting warehouses to the railway stations are driving operators to opt for road freight transport.
