Fiberglass is a composite material, which is widely used in the aerospace industry for its lightweight and eco-friendly nature. It is made of glass fiber reinforced plastics. Fiberglass is a fiber reinforced polymer, which is made of plastics and reinforced with glass fibers in a continuous stranded fashion.

The plastic may be a thermoset plastic (mostly epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester) or a thermoplastic. Glass fibers are made from various categories of glass, depending on the end-use. Glass fibers have silica or silicate along with some amount of oxides of calcium, magnesium, and boron. Fiberglass is lightweight and strong. It is not as strong as a carbon fiber but stronger than many metals. Its raw materials are comparatively cheaper than those of carbon fiber composites.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is implementation of composites in jet engines and aircraft interiors. Since the market for commercial air transport has been growing rapidly, the jet engines used in commercial aircraft account for a huge market value. Therefore, importance is being given to fuel efficiency, weight reduction, and increased performance efficiency of these engines.”

According to the report, one driver in market is demand for aircraft weight reduction and fuel efficiency. Fiberglass has a high strength-to-weight ratio, providing a weight saving of 20%-50% more than metal alloys. Its specific strength and modulus are higher than many other metallic alloys. Therefore, though fiberglass is lightweight, it provides the necessary strength required in aerospace applications. Fiberglass is used in aircraft to provide strong and lightweight body parts. Boeing, in its 787 Dreamline, used fiberglass as the main material in the airframe. By volume, it had 80% composites. The 787 Dreamline was 20% to 40% lighter in weight than other commercial planes. This low weight has resulted in a cut down in fuel consumption by approximately 40%. Also, Airbus A350XWB uses 53% composites such as fiberglass in airplane parts to reduce weight and fuel consumption.

Further, the report states that one challenges in market is complex design process. Although fiberglass is more desirable than metals, its use poses issues in damage tolerance and delamination and design challenges. Metals exhibit plasticity, which makes them capable of undergoing deformation (bend or stretch) under high loads before they break. This property of metals makes them more suitable to handle small impacts and loads with little reduction in the basic strength of the structure. The high plasticity of metals allows them to distribute the loads on the structure, saving them from conditions of permanent structural failure. However, fiberglass exhibits little to no plasticity. Thus, even small impacts could cause local damage to the composite matrix, leading to weakening of the structure. High loads and stress concentration in fiberglass can result in sudden structural failure as the load is not distributed as in metals.
