Over 2002-2013, the production and sales of motor vehicles in Brazil expanded at robust CAGRs of 7.8% and 8.9%, respectively. The rapidly growing domestic market attracted a strong wave of investment – during the period, a total of USD 24.6bn was invested in the automotive value chain – which increased domestic production capacity to 5mn vehicles per year, as of October 2016. Additionally, the government applied protectionist measures, such as high import taxes, to limit the entry of imported vehicles. However, with the unfolding of domestic political and economic crises since 2014, which provoked a significant fall in domestic vehicle sales, several structural deficiencies of the automotive industry have been revealed, such as high dependence on the domestic market, excessive production capacity and low international competitiveness.
