Indonesia is the largest electric power producer in the ASEAN region. In spite of this, in 2015 the country had an electrification rate of 88.3%, lagging behind neighbouring Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The government targets a 99.4% electrification rate by 2024.Power generation in the country is dominated by fossil fuels. Coal accounted for 53% of total generation in 2015, whereas natural gas and oil claimed 25% and 11%, respectively. The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in power generation in 2015 stood at 11% with hydropower accounting for 7%. Coal is also the dominant source by installed capacity. Coal power plants claimed 47% of the total installed capacity in Indonesia in 2015.
