In Poland, “metallic and non-metallic minerals mining” – also known as “non-coal mining” or “other mining,” since it excludes coal and lignite mining – concerns around 70 mineral raw materials, of which about 40 are important for the economy. Poland is a major producer of copper, silver, zinc and lead, as well as many industrial minerals, such as rock salt, sulphur, limestone, cement, lime, gypsum and mineral aggregates. Even though the sector does experience some ups and downs, it generally survives the down phases of economic cycles in a good condition. Its main challenge, however, is to find new deposits and the sector’s companies are often looking abroad for such opportunities.
