India is the world’s sixth-largest motor vehicle producer, claiming a share of some 5% in global vehicle manufacturing in FY2016. The country is also the world’s seventh-largest commercial vehicle producer. The industry’s output, sales, and exports are dominated by two wheeler which claimed shares of 70% or more in output, sales, and exports in FY2016. The sector enjoys bright medium-to-long term prospects, driven by the strengthening of the middle class, the underpenetrated rural market, and strong manufacturing performance. In the mid-term, the automotive industry – a term which will be used in this report to include two- and three-wheeler production – is set to modernise, aided by the government's drive to improve road infrastructure and introduce more stringent environmental norms, entailing the use of cleaner-burning fuels and more sophisticated engine technology.
