The Indian mining sector’s GVA accounted for some 3.8% of GDP in FY2016, as against 4.5% in the previous year. A number of mining commodities, such as crude oil, coal and iron ore, are not only domestically produced but also imported, which meant that mining claimed a hefty 37% of India’s total imports in FY2016 – a share unchanged over the past five years. Mining exports accounted for about 5% of India’s total in FY2016, while foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector was less than 2% of India’s total FDI.
