These freshwater resources are depleting due to the rise in the extraction of water from aquifers. The rate of water extraction from underground sources is higher than the rate of replenishment of water.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is impact of hard water on cleaning equipment. The presence of calcium and magnesium ions increases the hardness of water. These ions thicken and harden as their concentration increases. Scaling that occurs in the membranes due to the presence of ion blocks can be tackled by the regular backwashing of membranes. For instance, in an RO system, the scaling of membranes makes the RO system work even harder, resulting in the wastage of water, added utility bills, and inefficient water purification. Therefore, the wastewater generated contains a high amount of minerals and chemicals, contributing to the scale formation in the industrial equipment.
