The telecommunications market in Egypt is well developed and among the largest in the region in terms of subscriptions. However, in terms of digital infrastructure the company is yet to catch up to regional peers such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel. Egypt scored poorly on the 2019 Cisco Digital Readiness Index in comparison to its neighbours mentioned earlier.

Based on real GDP data published by the Ministry of Planning, the information and communications technology (ICT) sector grew by 13.7% in 2020. It was also one of the few sectors to show any growth (11.8% year on year) in the April-June quarter of 2020, when much of the economy was shut down as part of measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that mobile subscriptions will grow at an annual average rate of 4.3% during 2021-25. Fixed-line subscriptions will expand more rapidly (albeit from a low base), with annual average growth of 10.4%; the increase will reflect rising demand for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Broadband subscriptions will also continue to grow robustly, increasing at an annual average rate of 10.2% in 2021-25.
