Legacy services such as voice and text are an important part of any mobile operator’s offering because of their universal reach, and will remain so despite the move to all IP networks and the spread of voice and messaging services with higher levels of functionality but poor or non-existent inter-connectivity.

While MNOs in developed markets now largely rely on data traffic for their revenues, many MNOs in less developed markets continue to depend on a significant proportion of their revenues coming from legacy services.  Nevertheless, the continued importance of these services mean that it is in the interests of all MNOs and MVNOs to continue to promote them.

This report looks at the actions being taken by operators around the world to promote their voice and text services, whether they are seeking to increase customer loyalty and usage, improve their competitive position, increase their revenues, improve the attractiveness of their services and reduce the risk to new customers or promote use of new network technologies.  Using examples of operators’ activities from North America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Far East and Europe it provides guidance and recommendations on the optimum approaches for MNOs and MVNOs.
