  • Chemists at the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz, Germany say they have discovered a way to reduce the toxicity of cigarette smoke.Oxygen free radicals have been credited as one of the toxic elements of cigarette smoke, and their research suggests that the introduction of copper hydroxide to cigarette filters in order to eliminate these free radicals
  • ITC has recorded a decline in cigarette volumes in recent years due to the increase in excise duty on cigarettes as well as the effect of larger warning signs on tobacco packaging. It is also now entering the e-cigarette market with a vaping device sold under the Eon brand name
  • JTI is planning on spending US$500 million to quadruple its production capacity of its smokeless-tobacco devices to compete against its rival, Philip Morris in Japan. iQOS is proving to be a popular product since e-liquid containing nicotine is banned in the country, and this is an important business driver for JTI since their domestic cigarette sales volume is expected to decline by 9.6% this year
  • Malawi’s Mzuzu Auction Floors have opened with the highest price paid for flue-cured tobacco reaching US$4.35 per kg and that for Burley reaching US$2.20 per kg.
