About Wind Turbine Brakes

A wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electric energy. The turbine consists of a foundation, a tower, a nacelle, and a rotor. The nacelle comprises the large primary components, such as the main axle, gearbox, generator, and the transformer and control system. Brakes are an essential safety feature of wind turbines. These brakes are used for protection against over speeding as well as for stopping and holding the rotor, for maintenance purposes.

The analysts forecast the global wind turbine brakes market to grow at a CAGR of 5.46% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Wind Turbine Brakes Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global wind turbine brakes market: Altra, GKN, SIBER Siegerland Bremsen, Thomson Industries, and The Hilliard.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ANTEC, B.B. Group, Carlisle Brake & Friction, Cohort Manufacturing, GMP Friction Products, HANNING & KAHL, Hindon, Hydratech Industries, Knott-Avonride, KOR-PAK, Microlog Technologies, MIKI PULLEY - U.S.A, PINTSCH BUBENZER, Svendborg Brakes, W.C. Branham, and World Known Manufacturing.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is rise in offshore installations. The number of offshore wind energy installations has been small until now. However, countries worldwide are investing more in installing offshore wind farms. Several governments around the globe have committed to installing more offshore wind power, though difficulties, such as complex structures, higher installation costs, and costly maintenance operations, pose a challenge.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is regulations for wind turbine brakes. Governments worldwide have imposed regulations for the design and testing of brakes used in wind turbines. The testing and the design of the wind turbine system is to be as per IEC 61400-22 conformity testing and certification. This regulation classifies the brake system of the wind turbine by the component certification. This component certification requires brake design data, friction coefficient, and strength analysis results.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is faults in the brake system. Faults in the brake system of wind turbines lead to certain failures of the overall system. The failures of the system are explained in the exhibit below. The blue blocks in the exhibit reflect faults in the three-phase system of the brake, such as the motor and three-phase supplies. The green blocks in the exhibit reflect faults that occur within the hydraulic part of the brake system, that include the gear pump, and its surrounding parts. In addition, the brake discs also impose an additional load on the motor in the system.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
