IM hip screws are more expensive but favored by doctors because of the mechanical strength of the repair system over sliding plates and conventional hip screws. There is a decreased amount of operative blood loss and, accordingly, a shorter hospital treatment. They are best used for highly comminuted fractures of the greater trochanter.

Disadvantages include greater thigh pain and longer surgical procedure times. Additionally, the fractured limb must be reduced prior to the insertion of the intramedullary device.
