About 3D Glasses

3D glasses offer stereoscopic appearance of images. The viewing or appearance of the objects is as if in three-dimensions. In 1838, Sir Charles Wheatstone developed the first 3D viewing device called stereoscope by applying the principals of stereopsis. The stereoscope was a flat board fitted with mirrors and lenses and was enhanced by removing mirrors to make the view easier through lenses. This resulted in a device called lenticular scope, which was the first portable 3D viewing device.

In 3D viewing, the use of 3D glasses results in the darkening of content as these glasses are coated with a polarized filter. 3D glasses, whether active or passive, work by filtering the light. The use of 3D passive glasses filters out light of certain wavelengths, which results in a picture that is darker because of filtering the light. Using a 3D active shutter glass where the polarizing element has the opposite polarization orientation from a projector will result in loss of light because the projection screen retains some amount of that polarization.
