About Satellite Transponder

Satellite transponders receive electromagnetic or radiofrequency signals from the Earth, amplify these, and send them back to the Earth. These are important elements in communication satellites and receive signals with the help of frequency changers. A satellite consists of a number of transponders, which are used to receive a specified band of frequencies. A typical transponder provides a capacity of 36 MHz, which is the requisite for broadcasting an analog channel.

It can be used for voice, video, and data transmission and in a broad range of applications such as credit card validation, distance learning, store monitoring, inventory control, in-store audio and video surveillance, satellite news gathering, and broadband Internet access.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is emergence of broadband access, DTH, and DTT. Broadband refers to high-speed data transmission and Internet access made available through the provision of a number of frequencies. In broadband access, transmission technologies include digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modems. DTH technology receives signals that are transmitted from the direct broadcast communication satellites directly to the home. Digital terrestrial television (DTT) is a technological advancement on broadcast and analog television; it uses land-based radio frequency signals.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is time delay in communication. The lack of ability to communicate without time delay is the main challenge faced by satellite services in a communication system. In the communication process, transponders transmit the signals from one end, i.e., the orbit, to the other end, i.e., the ground station. A transmission delay is directly proportional to the altitude. Higher the altitude, higher is the transmission delay and the lesser is the suitability for multimedia or time-delay sensitive applications. This is high especially in the case of satellites in geostationary orbits, thus inhibiting the adoption of these satellites in voice communication.
