(Forecast closing date: February 8th 2021)

Mobile and broadband subscriptions will continue to rise over the forecast period (2021-25), albeit at a slowing pace, while fixed-line connections fall in most of the 60 countries covered by The Economist Intelligence Unit's global telecommunications forecasts. The biggest threat to our forecasts currently is the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. The technology and telecoms sector has weathered the storm more effectively than many other industry verticals, despite supply-chain delays during the initial stages of the pandemic. We expect growth in the overall sector to continue to recover in 2021, although at a slower pace than previously anticipated.

Much of this recovery will be the result of improved GDP growth prospects, primarily driven by the development of a Covid-19 vaccine. This should help drive sector growth towards the end of the forecast period, but we do not expect telecoms revenue to return to pre-Covid levels until 2024.
