About Automotive Thermal Management System

Automotive thermal management system (TMS) technologies are primarily used for reducing fuel emissions and improving passenger comfort. Its major functions include reducing thermal loads, transferring heat efficiently, and reusing of waste heat. An automotive TMS monitors and controls the operating temperature of various automobile systems such as power electronics, battery, electric drive units, engine, transmission, and passenger cabin area to improve the efficiency and prevent damage to the components.

The analysts forecast the global automotive thermal management system market to grow at a CAGR of 7.18% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Automotive Thermal Management System Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global automotive thermal management system market: Denso, Gentherm, MAHLE, and Valeo.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: AVID, BorgWarner, Bosch, CapTherm Systems, Dana, DuPont, Hanon Systems, and VOSS Automotive.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is evolution of PCM and GIHP. The emergence of high-density batteries and fast chargers in the EV market has led to an increase in the heat generation of battery packs. As the batteries consume less space, the heat is quickly generated in cells and in a higher amount since there is less space to dissipate it. Fast chargers increase the reaction rates in the battery cells to quickly fill the battery capacity in a few hours. This again increases the generation of heat.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is growing adoption of integrated TMS for vehicle components. TMS suppliers and OEMs are following the trend of integrating two or more systems to reduce the weight and size, thus involving less energy consumption. In EVs, hybrid vehicles, or ICE vehicles with the 48V/12V start-stop system, OEMs are integrating power electronics components into the same module such as a belt starter generator, electric drive (motor, generator, or inverter), and inverter-converter modules. Hence, the integration and sharing of a common TMS for battery and other electric drive components are gaining prominence.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is increasing cost pressure on OEMs and suppliers from demand side. The automotive industry has witnessed a structural change post the fiscal crisis of 2008 with some of the North American OEMs reaching the verge of bankruptcy. An introspective view of this situation shows how OEMs had been undertaking voluntary losses to cater to the requirements of price-sensitive consumers without pushing much of the liability and risk to the other stakeholders in the value chain (includes tire-1 suppliers and component manufacturers). OEMs adopted a business model of distributing the cost and the risk of recall or component failure to respective component manufacturers.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
